How much should a Da*200 lens be stopped down before it gives sharp IQ?

It also depends on your ISO.

All lens get a little better as you stop down a stop or 2, or even 3 (for lesser lens or very fast ones).

I don't have the DA* 200, but if you're using the lens in low light or fast action situations, i.e. with high ISO, the benefit from stopping down from f/2.8 to f/4 might be less than the performance hit going from ISO 1600 to 3200 for example... Then you have shutter speed to think about, so it's all a tradeoff: it all depends on what your subject is and how well you know your equipment....

I'm not sure if this was mentionned (i didn't read the entire thread) but make sure you take the time to do the necessary micro-focus adjustment to get the most out of the lens.
