What a difference a bit of paint can make...:-)

I think it is an excellent move from Sony to update this lens, because it shows some serious commitment to amateur wildlife photography... a field where both Canon and Nikon haven't updated their lenses in years. Right now this should be easily the best zoom lens in the 400mm class, with Canon providing a good but old 100-400mm, and Nikon a not-so-good and even older 80-400mm option. The 200-400mm f4 lenses of both brands are much more expensive, and appeal more to the pro market.

Now if Sony wants to get really serious, they should probably sell the 500 f4 slightly below the competition prices, and add a 600 f4 to it, and why not a 400 f2.8 for sports photographers. Then some of the amateur photographers would actually think twice about switching brands when upgrading to a more expensive 400mm, 500mm or 600mm lens.

And of course, providing a OVF alternative instead of SLT only would probably also help to keep some of these photographers with the brand.
