Re: your recommensations for a one-week trip to Turkey

Istanbul is a very easy city to visit. The people are friendly and it is easy to fall into the pace of life. Many people will try to sell you things. Be courteous if you wish to decline. The main attractions are best visited early before the majority of tourists leave their hotel. It is a great city to walk. It is exotic, but accessible. Visit every mosque you pass, large or small. Keep your eyes out for the Byzantine churches (many now converted to mosques) in the city.

Order a copy of John Freely's "Strolling Through Istanbul", one of the best city guides ever written.

See Topkapi, Hagia Sophia, and Blue Mosque. Visit St Savior in Chora with its amazing mosaics and frescoes. It is only a block from the outer city walls. Take the ferry ride up the Bosphorus. By a fish sandwich from the guys on the little boats at Eminonu.

If you have an Iphone or an Android load "CityMaps2Go" and download the onboard Istanbul map for worry free GPS navigation. Bring a small compass.

I have been to Istanbul seven times since 1972 and each time I go there it is like the first time. It has many layers and surprises. Have fun!
