70-200mm + D4 + 50% battery = focus problems?

A couple of times in the last weeks I have experienced the following problem:

Context

  • D4
  • Nikon 70-200mm MkII lens
  • <50% battery

Problem

  • Cannot focus on infinity at 70mm focal length (but can at longer focal lengths)
  • Manual focus will also not bring infinity into focus

Replace the battery and problem goes away. But the battery is far from empty and on whole day hikes this is a big problem if you only have a couple of batteries.

Question

  • Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
  • Is this a system or a lens defect. i.e. is it likely that returning the lens to Nikon will eventually deliver me a better outcome?

cheers and thanks in anticipation
