I hope your trip is a great success.

If you think that it may be difficult getting butterfly closeups, then you might want to make the trip -- the traveling, the people you are with or meet, and the overall experience of seeing the butterflies -- the stuff that you want to photograph. A small butterfly that you can't really see very well in a photo might be disappointing. You can always get some really good closeups of butterflies later on this year. A kind of photo documentary of your trip would be really nice.

That being said, I have had the best luck with butterflies in the afternoon and when they are feeding. When they are feeding they are still long enough that you may get some good close shots. I have gotten some good images of Monarchs but only when they were feeding and I try to keep my shadow from falling on them as I slowly move in. I have had some success with Monarchs feeding on asclepias by just sitting down among the flowers and having them get used to my presence.
