One of my (bought used) camera came with a lens hood. Some reading suggests it can prevent glare/flare. I am curious to know how (much) people use these... If you have one, is it just collecting dust in the drawer or is it a 'must have' for you on outdoor photo trips...?

It is a mistake to use a lens hood only outdoors. Even indoors there is often a source of light which is outside the picture and can have a negative effect in the form of glare or reduced contrast. The source of light is much weaker than the sun, but you are also using higher ISO, longer exposition, lower f-number. Most professionals use a lens hood all the time.
