No, not really. 8bit Tiff with a gamma of 2.2 does not contain measurably more tonal or color information than a high-quality Jpeg. 16bit tiff with gamma 1.0 will be a significant improvement in terms of shadow detail... but it's about 96MB uncompressed.

There are two potential solutions. 1. Write 12-bit TIFFs, but that might run the risk of other software not knowing what to do with them; 2. Allow in-camera conversion to TIFF in review mode, not when shooting.

How do Nikon achieve it? My D3s bodies write TIFFs pretty fast even at the highest bit setting.

Two possible explanations come to mind:

1. it's possible that the Fujis could write as fast, but they just haven't implemented it yet. There are rumors about Fuji being petitioned to write TIFFs and Fuji considering it.

2. it's possible that the Fujis aren't up to the task, with the processor and everything else being maxed out with the actions currently implemented.

Under some circumstances, the X-E1 is locked up when it takes its time to write the data. It's probably not necessary to lock the camera in such situations as in other situations it's not locked up. But in any case, there seems to be some room for improvement in this respect.
