I think you have that backwards. The 12-24 works well from 17-24mm on FX. It is in the 12-16mm range that it doesn't quite cover FX. However, if you shoot in FX (turn off the automatic crop for DX lenses) you can just crop as much as needed for the focal length used.

You are probably right about the 12-24.

But are you sure that cropping would give you better IQ than DX-mode on D800/E, with all other factors equal? (I mean proper exposition in both cases.)
