Lens setting as a possibility is eliminated.

If you can get hold of your friends lens again, looking through the front of the lens see if the aperture stops down when taking a one second exposure.

If the lens does stop down when taking a picture check if the file EXIF data shows 2 stop exposure compensation.

Is your friend gets correct exposure on his camera body and the lens stops down (you imply it does using depth of field preview) it is not the camera aperture linkage as the amount the lens stops down is determined by the lens linkage.
