If the sun's over your left shoulder, it's unlikely you'll see any flare, so the hood wouldn't make any difference anyway.

Mostly true, but here with snow or other very bright or reflecting things in front of you, you could have veiling flare from off-image areas and concomitant loss of contrast with a poor lens, but for the 70-200 it's probably not an issue here, looks fine.
