If the bright area is relatively large compared to the darker area, AF point has little impact and the camera will expose for the bright area. If the bright area is relatively small compared to the dark area, AF point has major impact if it hits that bright area and exposure will lean to which ever area your AF point is on.

What frustrated me was the small bright area would drive the matrix exposure to underexpose even if the light was not under any focus area...even if it was outside the center focus/metering box completely.
