Really? You think the 24-85 VR = 24-70 2.8?

It's odd because I'm a big believer in fast glass. But the 24-85vr really does what my 24-70 did and does it more easily, adds VR versatility and it doesn't weigh or cost a ton. I know my copy is every bit as sharp as the 24-70 2.8 and I simply get more done with it.

Nice to have choices in any case!

I must admit, I have the 24-85 for a simple walk around lens and on the D800e, it is extremely sharp. A big surprise for a "kit" lens. It has made me rethink about getting the 24-70mm f/2.8.

Look at these comparisons from the-digital-picture. Roll over the image to change it from the 24-85 to the 24-70.

24mm @ f/4 — This is the weakest fl. for the Nikon 24-70 2.8. Look at the purple fringing on the 24-85. Note corner sharpness.

50mm @ f/4 — Look at how much sharper the 24-70 is.

Vignetting — check it at all focal lengths and equivalent f/stops

Flare — Note how most of the frame is covered with white glare on the 24-85.
