Re: Yes...because I use both...

I use a DSLR for much the same reasons that others have given. I also have two compact cameras for the times that I want a pocketable camera. When I do use the DSLR I tailor my kit to what I'm doing. I'm 69 so I like to travel as light as possible. For travel I'll take my D3100, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 18-200 II OS HSM, and sometimes my Nikon 10.5mm full frame fisheye. All together this kit weighs under four pounds. With the bag and a few small accessaries it's still only around 5 pounds. I'm still not that feeble that 5 pounds is too much to carry around for most of the day.

For the zoo or aquarium I take my D3100 with my Sigma 50-150 f/2.8, Nikon 55-300 VR, and Nikon 35mm f/1.8. Still not a heavy load.

Sometimes I'll just take the D3100 with the 18-200, and sometimes I'll just put my Panasonic LX7 or my Panasonic ZS15 travel zoom in a pocket and use just that.

Cameras are tools. I use the one that best fits my needs at the time.
