Sean you provide solid advice, but for a beginner like me (and I suspect for other readers) my thought is to "keep it small and simple" at first where early video shooting, editing, and output efforts are sort of trial runs to get our feet wet.  Large video files are more time consuming to handle both in file management and editing.  It's kind of like RAW for still shooting.  All the Pros recommend it for everything.  My view coming from the days when a 10meg (yeah meg!) $400 hard drive was HUGE and that it's always good to be thoughtful about file size and handling performance.
