if you could choose between owning the Zeiss 24mm + SEL50F18 + SEL16&VCL-ECU1 vs SEL1018 + SEL35F18, what would you go for? I know set 1 is a little more pricier, so one can maybe also add SEL50F18 to set 2, but it's a bit too close to SEL35 IMHO; The future E-mount 85mm may be a better combo with SEL35F18, but that'll definitely make set 2 much pricier.

Let's see, in set 2, under low light you'd be using the SEL35F18, or the ... SEL35F18.

In other words, if you like the 35mm FL, set 2 is perfect.

In set 1, you'd have a choice between SEL24F18 or SEL50F18. Nice choices, but no 35mm option.

So, if you don't like the 35mm FL, set 1 is perfect.

If you are fond of wide angles, go for set 2. Even though set 1 gives you the WA option.

Traditionally, a 2x step up in FL was sufficient to cover most ranges. So, 16, 24, 50 is a good set, and so would 1018, 35, 85 be.

If you do video, set 2 is best, as set 1 only has the SEL50F18 as a stabilized option.

How about set 3:

  • SEL16F28 + ECU
  • SEL20F28 (if too pricey, or low IQ, swap for Sigma 19 instead)
  • SEL35F18 OSS
  • SEL50F18 OSS
  • SEL85F18 OSS (assumed)

Expecting to cost somewhere between the cost of set 1 and set 2.

The Zeiss SEL2418Z gets you about three other prime SEL lenses, look at it this way.

your set 3 suggestion is quite worth considering. I'd take out the SEL50 since it's rather redundant IMHO having that alongside with the 35 and 85. The SEL20 seems to me as just an option if I need something pocketable, so it might not be necessary either. So I might end up with a budget option if I go down this route!

However I am not putting my expectations high for the SEL85; since it seems like they are just replicating specs of the A-mount DT lenses, the chance of them making an SEL85F28 may be higher. And according to E-mount's ridiculous pricing, the f/2.8 version will probably be around $450, and f/1.8 version around $800
