If that was an early review, you need to check out what effect the latest Firmware has had.  With regard to the different apertures, the AF sensitivity (vertical / horizontal etc.) of different AF spots depends on the lens maximum aperture - AF is done at the maximum effective aperture of the lens, or lens + extender combination.  The centre spot is the most sensitive, and will now work down to F/8 with the latest Firmware - e.g. an EF 600 F/4 with a 2x extender.
