I totally agree that the overall objective and lighting of the scene dictates what's best more than anything. As far as personal preferences go, I like the middle exposure of your example the best. By far. But that's my opinion. To me the first is underexposed and unappealing, the 3rd, slightly "hot" and 2 dimensional for my tastes. However, in this shot of mine I chose to leave the snow a little darker because it was in the shadowy/steamy river bottom and not the primary lit subject, which was El Capitan. I could have HDR'd it to brighten up the snow and river, but it wasn't the look I was going for.
