I find hard to fault a camera, especially when flash photography is involved. Pardon my bluntness, but it's almost certainly the case that there is an issue with your technique - and if you're interested, post an example and we could provide more details

EDIT: Unless if "with flash on" you simply mean using the onboard flash directly? Then of course the photos will look harsh, unnatural, and unflattering! Direct flash is the Devil's instrument when it comes to portraits!
