How do you do AE-Lock?

Most people just use dedicated AE/AF lock button that is present on all DSLRs back to D70 days.

On newer bodies we have very useful AF-ON button that can lock the focus when depressed and ability to half-press shutter button to lock exposure when custom function "c1 - Shutter-release button AE-L" (at least it is there on my D700).

I am now thinking about recycling AE/AF lock for different purposes (dedicated FV lock button). I wanted to ask if anybody can think of any negative consequences of tying AE exposure lock with shutter release and giving up dedicated AE lock button.
