The issue, I think, is that the STM focus motor was designed for use with video and contrast detect autofocus, so it isn't intended to snap to focus the way that USM does.

Personally, if I want to photograph sports with a relatively short prime lens, I turn to my 85mm f1.8. Landscapes and out-and-about photography suits the 40mm well.
