Haven't used a replacement focusing screen since film (Nikon F, Nikon N90). In those days I preferred the microprism over the split image screens. However, they didn't work in all situations. IIRC, they didn't function properly with macro shooting or with long slow lenses.

With digital cameras (D2x, D700, and D800E) I've found the Nikon DK-17M magnifying eyepiece to be very helpful with manual focus. Not recommended if you wear glasses.
