The 500 F4 IS Mk ll was launched at a price of £9000 it is now down to £7700 and should settle at around £6000 in six months or so, new Canon products typically fall by a third over the 1st year.

I always wished for a straight forward 400 F4 but Canon decided to opt for what I assume is for the paparazzi market with a 400 F4 DO at a high price.

I would have thought a conventional 400 F4 IS should be possible at a launch price of £4500 falling to £3000 i.e half the price of the 500.

Price of the DO was higher than expected when introduced in 2001.  Not so much now.

There is little physical difference in 200 f/2, 300 f/2.8, and 400 f/4.  Current prices (USD) are:

  • EF 200 f/2L IS USM, 12/17 (groups/elements), objective must be at least 100mm, 2.5 kg = $6000
  • EF 300 f/2.8L II IS USM 12/16, 107mm, 2.35 kg = $6800
  • EF 400 f/4 DO IS USM, 13/17, 100mm, 1.95 kg = $6000

A new EF 400 f/4L IS USM (non-DO) would be very similar to the 200/2L and 300/2.8L.  I don't understand the expectation that it would be less expensive.
