I use various long lenses, the AF-S 70-300 VR being the one I use most! Ancient manual telephoto lenses works as well (manual mode, of course), while some Sigma lenses with OIS do not work! Tamrons (F Mount versions) are said to work, but I have no experience, if they have internal focusing motor. So the mileage varies ...

The 30-110 is the best for everyday birding use, though!

As others have mentioned for shooting birds in flight you do best with manual focusing!
