I have struggle with the same dilemma, with D5100 and 18-55 3.5-4-5 VR. Best option is to use the best light you can get, a window, interior lights, etc. Expose correctly, and set ISO accordingly (or use auto ISO till 800-1600), use flash if needed. If you correct exposure in PP you will get more noise for sure. The secret is quality light, you can shoot in 3200ISO and get quite clean photos as long as the light is good for that ISO.
