Around 1:1, whatever lens you are using, you'll find it easier to set your magnification and then focus by moving either the whole camera assembly or the subject. For static work the easiest way is to use a macro focusing rail. If you're chasing bugs around the garden you'll probably do it by leaning back & forth to get the image sharp.
