Re: Is a protection plan worth it? Only if you cannot afford to eat the repair or replacement.

Insurance is to cover the cost of damages or repairs you cannot pay for out of pocket. Homeowner's Unbrella policies, collision coverage on a newer car, etc.

I haven't read any comments about putting the cost of an extended warranty into an alternative investment.

Over time, declining any extended warranties but putting the equivalent payments into a conservative mutual fund will likely do better for you.  With success, the gains of any such fund can be tapped to pay for out of warranty repairs.
