Re: How much is reasonable for a hobbyist to spend on camera gear?

Spend what you want. What you want will be balanced by what you need; what you can afford; and most important, how much you love your hobby. If you find that it really becomes a passion, you'll probably spend a little more than you want at first, but you'll draw back because of common sense, or when your wife kicks your butt.

But perhaps the greatest equalizer will be purpose. What is the purpose of your photography? Is it to take family snapshots, or to create photographic art? Is it to catch that touchdown, or that vase with an incredible background. Is it to move past the hobbyist designation to becoming a professional? Whatever your purpose is or becomes will dictate how much you spend. What you don't want is to spend on things just to have things, unless your hobby is not photography, but collecting. Photography equipment can suck you in to places you don't need to be. Be careful.
