You are exactly right.  The 70-200 f4 is practically tiny compared to the 2.8 versions (67mm vs 77mm front filter).

The Nikon tripod collar is pricey, but is a solid, well-made item.  Unless you plan to shooting handheld 100% of the time, the collar is essential.   I got mine 2 days after I received the lens, so I had a chance to use it with and without, and it's night and day stability wise.
