The idea of using a lens that has an even overall softness is a useful one, though. The lens would need just the right amount of sharpness so that it got the best out of the sensor resolution but no more. Maybe one of the varable sharpness portrait lenses would make a good experimental lens?

Actually, I think a lens with a "sharp" center is about the perfect one for an aliasing  "test" image. One could compare what the image looks like "blurred" in some areas by the lens and the rest sharp, and compare what happens to aliasing in the blurred part of the image without arguing about too many other confounding factors.

Such a lens might not be of much practical use on the camera, but it would be perfect for a test.
