Obviously you don't want a 3-way pan/tilt head since you can't predict the bird's path of flight and control all 3 levers at the same time while pressing the shutter button. You didn't say whether your lens was a 2.8 or f/5.6 which makes a difference but a quality ball head like the Markins Q20 ir RRS BH55 is excellent. But even a swivel head like the cheap Manfrotto 234RC2 on a monopod would help alleviate the strain..........
