The basic point of a gimbal is that it moves the balance point to be closer to the center of the setup, which makes it easier to rotate and aim the camera. Which means that you don't have to constantly hold it to maintain a position. Now, when they're actually BIF that's not going to help, but if you're hoping to catch a bird that's taking off, then it can be helpful.

Gimbals are also good in that they make long lenses like this more manageable as the camera isn't wanting to point down the way that they would with a regular ballhead, which can make it somewhat more manageable when you're wanting to track a bird as you don't have to use as much friction to keep the camera from pointing downward.

But, if you prefer to work with a monopod, then it's likely not worthwhile.
