as I've been decrying in another thread, I'm not exactly impressed with the Sigma 50 1.4 I purchased at the same time as the 35, it seems extremely soft at the 1.4 setting compared to the 35 1.4. in fact the 35 1.4 blows my copy of the 50 1.4 away in that aperture range.

Sounds about right, no?

Looking at this thread here: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM -SIGMALUX-, it appears I "might" have a bad copy of the 50

How can you tell, though?

In the link you posted, I don't see a full size picture, nothing to indicate how sharp (or not) it is. And you do know "Sigmalux" is just a clever name for the thread, it's not actually anywhere near the Summilux, if you expected that kind of quality..

I'm not sure you understand what I wrote. I'm not concerned about a Summilux, I don't even know what it is, I care about the image quality of the Sigma 50 1.4!

With regards to the link posted, regardless of the name, all those images were shot with the Sigma 50 1.4, and that I'm saying those images are a lot sharper than what I'm getting at the moment with my Sigma 50 1.4. That is the only point I’m making! And as I've said before, if not here, elsewhere, the 50 1.4 can be hit or miss with regards to sharpness; It appears I got a miss version.

Probably not. The Sigma 35mm f1.4 is an extroadinary lens. The best 35mm out there and the best lens Sigma has ever made, regardless of price or make. The Sigma 50, on the other hand, is a VERY average lens - at best.

With that, I stand by my statement that at the 1.4 setting, the Sigma 35 blows my copy of the Sigma 50 away. I know because I actually have photos to compare. The fact that I've not posted them (yet) doesn't mean it isn't so.

Actually, it will blow all copies away.

Anyway I’ve got another week to play with it before I can return or swap it as I’ve not had a chance to get out and really play with both lenses.

To be continued…
