I think it really depends on what you're trying to sell. If there's typically lots of interest--example, 35mm f/2.4 Flektogon--then, sure, start it low and let the bidders ratchet the price up. But if it's an item that might draw only a few bidders you run the risk of selling way under market.

Also, eBay fees are greater for auctions than for BIN.

It really pays to use "completed listings" to check out recent action: what did things sell for? what price did they start at? how many bidders showed up?

I also NEVER set a reserve price because I know I absolutely won't bid (or watch) an item with one. It just pi$$es me off, and I figure others would feel the same way.
