I just recently aquired the Sony 55-300 and I couldn't be happier. It's unbelievably sharp considering its price. I've never used the Tamron so I can't compare. However here are some sample pics:

Additionally Kurt Munger and Alpha Mount World have reviewed the lens at their respective websites.

I can definitely recommend it.

I've had my 55-300 for a couple of days and I have to agree. I've been mulling the options for a while, but when a 55-300 came up new for $260 AUD inc shipping, it seemed too good to pass up.

Quite Sharp

Handles nicely with smooth and fairly precise zoom and focus rings - unlike DT 18-55 and DT 55-200. Manual focus is not a chore.

Focus motor is noisy - not for video

AF can be sloooow in poor light

Some pin cushion distortion.

Some CA.

I compared sharpness with some other lenses - Tamron 200-500, Sony DT 55-200 and an old M42 SMC Takumar 200mm. The 55-300 is as sharp or sharper than any of them. It is much better than the DT 55-200 which I was always disappointed with. At 300mm the 55-300 is as sharp as the Tamron 200-500 - perhaps sharper. However the Tamron has almost  no distortion and very little CA.

You get f4.5 up to about 150mm, f5 up to about 200mm and f5.6 above 200mm.

The comments about distortion and CA derive from shooting a cheopo test chart. Real world effects are far less obvious.

Overall, really good for the price and I am left wondering how much more you get with the 70-300G which always seemed a bit overpriced to me.
