The good news is that for 95% of shots, the S95 is just as good, and for many shots, it's more painless.

This is actually good to hear (maybe you're telling me what I want to hear). I have an Olympus OMD EM-5 with a full spectrum of lenses and a Canon S95. I'm traveling to Ireland this summer and was strongly considering buying the RX100 as my new "backup" P&S to back up the Oly, especially for inconspicuous indoor low light shooting like in a pub. If the difference is sufficiently small that it actually takes a while to realize, there's no reason for me to spend almost $700 for the RX100 (includes the grip I would want to get if I purchased one).

Yeah - when I started this post, I was definitely leaning towards getting an S95 for my everyday pocket use, and I don't think there's been much to counter that thought, other than I so wish it could zoom during video.  The S95 is a little more comfortable than the Sony, and I'm not as scared of dropping it.

There was one terrifying incident where I was on a cliff edge with severe exposure, and I'm afraid of heights, but I was up there trying to get forest-top scenes with my RX-100.  It was a little more scary than usual, because I couldn't easily/quickly slip the RX-100 into and out of my pocket when I suddenly needed both hands to hold on.  Not a dig against the RX-100, but there are times convenience wins out...  Maybe a neck strap next time.
