After almost 5 years of pretty intensive use, I'm still thrilled with the camera.

Just two things constantly keep annoying me:

  • Not a 100% viewfinder - have to guess/crop sometimes
  • The lack of focal-length-based auto ISO (can be fixed in firmware, why not, Nikon?!)

Other than that, I still don't have a compelling reason to upgrade, especially considering I'm not a pro.

I shot with the D600 - D800/E and chose the D700 over these and just brought/received my mint D700 with 6k shutter counts second hand - so far I'm impressed by the ISO and speed with grip/Nikon EN-EL4 battery - 8fps - I shoot wildlife mostly with my D300s and now the D700 will be used for low light conditions.

In photography - you're judge by the images you take - not by the camera/lens you use.
