I have never understood why Nikon implemented the banks the way they did.  I stopped using them altogether because every time I changed a setting for a particular situation, it changed the setting permanently for whatever bank I was in at the time.  The whole point of settings banks is (or rather, should be) that I have a set of defaults for specific types of shooting, and I can go back to those defaults whenever I need to, resetting anything I've changed in the interim.  If any changes I make become the new defaults for the current bank, what's the point?

I see no indication that Nikon understands that this is a problem - it's been that way since the D200, so it's unlikely to change in any upcoming firmware release.
