Light which is not needed to form the APS-C image will bounce around the lens and body interior, contributing somewhat to flare. So a tighter hood will minimize that effect. A tighter hood will also allow one to aim closer to the light source without light from the source hitting the lens directly.

Moral: a hood as tight as possible is better. The best hoods are format-shaped--i.e. rectangular.
