Yes variable aperture is not as convenient for the photographer. Though my view has always been that if I am carrying a zoom with a big glass front element to give say f4.0 at the long end, then when at the short zoom end I'd like the benefit of the wider aperture.

I am no optical engineer, but I have always wondered whether the optical formula is less complex (and so less compromised) with variable aperture.
