Ring flash / light with 60mm Macro

I was wondering if there are any experiences with 60mm macro used with a ring flash / LED light. I have to confess that I am really annoyed by the design decisions for the 60mm as a macro lens:

- the 39mm thread is ridiculously small; nothing is that small and you have to use step-up rings. Even with that the highest step-up is 39-52

- putting a whole flash ring on the front element of the lens seems very precarious. The LED ring that I have is quite light fortunately and the front element build seems solid enough, but I still fear that a jolt to the ring will spit my lens in two

- probably the most annoying is the fact that when switching in Playback mode the lens wants to pull the front element back in and the step-up ring gets in the way so the camera issues an error message, something on the lines of "an error occurred; turn the camera on and off" as if there was a problem with the focus motor. There is actually no way to overcome this unless I could find a step-up ring that has the lens thread quite long so that the full movement for the front element can be completed.

Has anyone any (good) experience with this lens used with a flash ring / LED light?
