Not trying to talk you into or out of anything but flash memory is cheap.  if you're a hobbyist and shooting for a day to a few weeks at a time, I'd preserve originals as shot, on multiple flash cards.

In the evenings, I'd load my day's shots via USB onto the tablet and review/cull, keep favorites, selectively edit, and upload somewhere if so desired/able.  IOW, only keepers are backed up on the tablet, but all are preserved on original flash cards until trip is over.

One alternative way to store to disk is by using an iUSBPort by Sanho, which although wireless, it uses an ad hoc (local, no internet) wireless network.  Available for Android and iOS.
