Photographer? Yes... Artist? No...

I have been taking photos for 49 years, mostly with fancy stuff, from 6x6 to Contax RTS + Zeiss, Canon 5D +L lenses, now the RX1, you name it. Now, Cappa, Cartier Bresson are photographers. I just take pictures, nothing else in common.
I wonder if many of you consider yourselves photographers.

I sell stock photography, book a few weddings a year, do classical and environmental portraiture, shoot tabletop and product. I also do a job nobody wants to do, but a job I enjoy. I do clipping paths and retouching. I suppose that makes me a photographer. People like my stuff enough to pay for it, and after all these years, it's a feeling that never gets old.

When I shoot for me, I'm not a photographer, I'm a technician. For pleasure I shoot wildlife, mostly birds. It's technical photography. Sharpness, exposure, color balance and DOF. Nothing really artistic. I am quite envious of photographers who get paid doing the type of photography I love.

I'm just grateful that I can get paid for doing photography, even if it's not the photography I love.

I'm a photographer when I shoot stuff that does nothing for me.
I'm not a photographer when I shoot what I want to shoot.
