Re: So what is the truth, Fuji?

The idea that putting off the 23mm so that people buy the X100s is an interesting one, not least because it's now what I'm thinking of doing. I'd really hoped to be able to just carry the one camera but without the focal length I use for a lot of my work the X-E1 doesn't make so much sense any longer. Shame, because I have bought the body, zoom and 14mm on the basis that the lens roadmap was at least broadly true. I didn't realise it was quite so.....well, let's be charitable and call it "speculative."

I quite like the camera, but it won't come alive for me without the 23mm. Fuji of course are under no obligation to produce any particular piece of equipment just because I (or even thousands of others) want it rather badly--but I do wish they had not misinformed us about their intentions. If they'd been more transparent when they published the roadmap then their customers would have been in a better position to make well-informed decisions themselves. Or even if they had simply not published one at all.

In the long run, though, I'd be surprised if ensuring sales of X100s was the reason for Fuji's decision, as the smallish number of sales of the X100s that they might lose to a specialist and expensive lens would probably be outweighed by the potential for (a) higher margins on that lens and (b) additional sales of X-series bodies. I suspect the reason is not especially Machiavellian, but simply that they have found that they don't have the resources and the competencies to execute their plan. That's a pretty common reason for failing to deliver on a promised strategy.

So, although it's annoying, I might just make the decision to trade in my X100 for an X100s and forget the 23mm. I'll make a decision when the high ISO performance of the X100s is well reported, because that's the main advantage of the X-E1 for me, (I can easily live with f2 rather than f1.4.) If it's as good as the X-E1 I'd be happy with the camera (but not so happy that I'd fallen into the trap of believing what now looks like a just another piece of empty marketing.) And if only they make the X100s in black....
