Your options are pretty much either the D300(s) or the D7000. The only real difference between D300 and D300s is that the D300s has video capability. If you don't want that, you can save money by going for the D300. The D7000 is quite much more expensive than a used D300, but still well within your budget.

The only real advantage of the D7000 is the newer sensor (hence bit better image quality, particularly in high iso). I personally prefer the ergonomics and ruggedness of the D300.
