6D w/ 70-200 f4

6D w/ 70-200 f2.8

I have both and grabbed two quick shots this am for your comparison. The 2.8 II excels at shooting wide open, especially at the tele end. That's why I have it. The added weight doesn't bother me and overall I prefer the 2.8 over the 4 for my needs(shooting university events and features). For what you are shooting, the 4 is the best choice IMO. It's easy to handle for portraits and for outdoor sports the 4 works very well.

I was shooting studio portraits with the 4 and the results were razor sharp on the 6D at 100asa. Two days later I'm shooting the 2.8 at 3200/6400 wide open in mixed hotel lighting.
