Having been to New York several times I'd say you'll be more than fine with the 18-105 and the 35, or any other combination.
I did a couple of trips with the 16-85 alone and others where I added the 35 and a Sigma 10-20. The wide was nice on some shots in Lower Manhattan, but I did not bring it another time. I'm just not a wide person.
My recent trips have been with the D700 and the pair 35/1.4 - 85/1.4, which has been more than fine.

Everything works in New York, as long as it works for you. The photographic possibilities are endless. So take the 18-105 and add a lens that makes you happy/excited/inspired. That combination will make you take the best shots.
