I agree. Sony is thinking more in the video than in the photography. They don't care about image quality anymore, it's better to have AF in video than the best IQ, even if no one that is serious about video is going to use it. The funniest thing is that they have the resources to make a limited niche market camera like the RX1, and not to make an A700 and A900 DSLR replacement.

That's quiet short through the corner (Dutch expression). There is more to this AF system than for video. The AF works continues during shooting still pictures. Instead of Canikons version, where AF needs to adjust after each picture taken.

What he meant is that the AF sensor still gets a feed during exposures, contrary to traditional DSLR AF systems (such as still used by Canon and Nikon) which lose their AF signal during exposure.

For example during a rapid 10 fps burst that means there's no AF signal for about 60 to 80% of the time (based on 60 to 80ms top class blackout times from Nikon and Canon). Which in turn means that the SLT AF system is less dependant on predictive algorithms with their inherent error margins.

It is even more surprising that despite the theoretical advantage of the SLT system, the Canikon lens/body combos seem to track better than the Sony equivalents. The thing is, in theory ´╗┐the Sony system works better, but Canikon have worked for so long around this handicap, with predictable AF and much, much more field experience, that their higher end bodies still outperform Sony's SLT bodies by a margin.
