If nikon was smart, they'd learn from the d3/d700 boondoggle. Once the d700 came out, sales of the d3/s dropped dramatically because teh d700 with battery grip was 95% of a d3 but for $2000 less. nikon is out to make money and it would be smart to offer only 1 35mm sports dSLR. The d400/d9000 will be the affordable action dSLR. No reason that they have to make 3 affordable 35mm dSLRs! They already have the d600 and d800.

This is a flawed argument because most customers aren't going to spend $6k for a D4. If Nikon offers no other sports camera (trying to force them to buy a D4), then they will just lose a majority of their sports customers to the competition. That's what competition does for you. You have to meet the customer's needs or someone else will and you will lose the customer.

I rather doubt the D700 hurt Nikon's profits one bit.
