It makes a HUGE difference when you use a camera and lenses that were designed for manual focus.

There was nothing quite like being able to swap out focusing screens from a standard center split image microprism to a bright matte that would just "pop" when your subject was in focus for shooting long tele.  Follow focus for action on a MF camera like the Canon F-1 wasn't bad at all when you had the option to use a screen that matched the lens you were using and the conditions you were shooting under.  I know the new F-1 offered 32 different screens for various lens type and shooting conditions.  You weren't trying to MF using the crappy stationary screen installed in a camera that was designed for AF.  Made a huge difference.  No focus peaking required.
