The trouble with that point is that larger sensors are improving all the time as well...so the relative comparative advantage remains.

The 1/2.3 sensor received a huge boost with backlit technology that does not provide the same proportional benefit to larger sensors such as 1.1/7 size, which is why most larger sensors are not backlit. Read any sensor expert on Open Talk and they will tell you the smallest sensors have had the most money poured into R&D and are far more advanced than their larger counterparts.

The gap between the best 1/2.3 sensor(almost certainly 12mp Sony) and the average 1/1.7 is now very small - see DXO result for Pentax Q vs say XZ1.
